Chief Nohonest’s Garden, Zithulele
3 September 2026
On 3 September 2026 AgriVision Foundation visited Chief Nohonest at her community garden in Mpame. Although progress is steady rather than rapid, the positive impact of this garden reaches widely across the village. Chief Nohonest remains deeply dedicated, working in the garden almost every day with the help of a small group of faithful volunteers.
On the previous visit we focused on establishing raised no-till beds to reduce the enormous weed pressure. She and her team subsequently built six new beds of approximately 50 metres each, carefully laid out to accommodate the irrigation system generously sponsored by Vegtech. The beds were well constructed, yet further guidance was needed on the best materials for long-term weed suppression and on continuing to build with organic matter and compost.
During this visit the main emphasis was on the critical importance of making compost daily. With a garden of roughly half a hectare, continuous compost production will allow her to build healthy beds using quality organic material instead of relying on kraal manure.
Fresh seed kindly donated by Enza Zaden was delivered, and Chief Nohonest was especially delighted with the tomatoes. Practical training followed on correct planting, trellising and pruning of tomatoes, skills that were new to the team and received with great excitement. Time was also spent on general garden work while discussing plant spacing, intercropping and the many benefits of organic farming.
Chief Nohonest is a true pillar in her community. Her quiet dedication and perseverance inspire both men and women throughout Mpame. AgriVision Foundation holds her in high regard and remains committed to walking alongside her with ongoing mentorship and support as this valuable community garden continues to grow and bless many.
